Nutritional Management of the Transition Cow

چکیده

The transition period for dairy cows, which refers to the time from 3 weeks before through 3 weeks after calving, is now recognized as the most critical phase of the lactation cycle (Drackley , 1999) . Nutrition and management during this period essentially determine the profitability of th e cow for the remainder of the lactation . A problem-filled transition gets cows off to a poor start to lactation. Signs of an inadequate transition program include cows that are slow to come onto feed after calving, an excessive incidence of metabolic disorders, cyclic feed intakes, and excessive loss of body condition after calving (Drackley, 1998) .

The transition period for dairy cows is generally defined as the time period from three weeks prior to parturition through three weeks after parturition. It is now recognized that defining and meeting the nutritional requirements of the transition dairy cow can greatly impact animal health, production in the ensuing lactation, overall longevity, and animal well-being (NRC, 2001). Relationship of Cow Size, Cow Requirements, and Production Issues

Introduction Proper nutritional status is critical for optimal production efficiency in the beef cow herd. Meeting the nutrient requirements of the productive cow is a prime factor in the cow’s reproductive success and overall herd profitability. Phase-Feeding the Beef Herd for Improved Feed Utilization

Proper nutritional status is critical for optimal production efficiency in the beef cow herd. However, beef producers often take a “one size fits all” approach to feeding the cows in the cow herd. This singular approach to nutrient supply for the cow herd can have serious nutritional and economic ramifications. It should be obvious that not all cows have the same nutrient requirements. Nutritio...

The transition period for a dairy cow is from two to three weeks prepartum until two to three weeks postpartum

The transition period for a dairy cow is from 3 to 2 wk prepartum until 2 to 3 wk postpartum. It constitutes a turning point in the productive cycle of the cow from one lactation to the next. The manner in which these changes occur and how they are managed are of gr...

Reproductive management of postpartum cows.

High reproductive efficiency in the dairy cow requires a disease-free transition period, high submission rates to AI and high pregnancy rates per service. A key risk factor that causes increased incidence of metabolic disease is low negative energy balance (NEB) in the periparturient and early postpartum periods. Low NEB decreases LH pulse frequency, growth rate and diameter of dominant follicl...
